Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens also known as Queen Latifah is an American rapper singer. Her work as a music actor, filmmaker and TV performer has garnered an impressive two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award as well as six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was the daughter of an Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and an Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was raised and born in Newark New Jersey. Her parents divorced around the age of 10. Latifah went to Catholic school and was educated at Newark New Jersey. She went to the Baptist church. At the age of 8, her cousin gave Latifah the name of a stage Latifah that means gentle and loving in Arabic. Latifah was who was 5'10" tall power forward on the team at her high school, was always tall. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz in a performance at her highschool. Latifah was part of the Ladies Fresh, a rap group that launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah was among the founding members of the model of the Flavor Unit which at that time was a crew of MCs who were grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a sample of Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to the host of Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song and made a deal with Latifah in 1988, to drop her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
